How to get there:
One may ski this mountain from Vaksdal or from Bergsdalen. This report describes the Bergsdalen alternative.
From Bergen, drive E-16 to the small town Dale, make a right here and drive up the steep and interesting road There is signed parking for Høgabu on your left at location N60.57361, E5.94198, elevation near 440 meter.
Route description:
First, follow the route that serves the DNT hut Høgabu. It is marked, but still hard to follow in winter unless there are recent tracks. At about 800 meter of elevation, this route crosses a tiny, but distinct valley. Leave the route here and continue south-west in this valley. You will cross the small lake Klingetjørni, then the larger lake Gråvatnet. Continue about one kilometer after you leave Gråvatnet. Here, a small river from Sauadalsvatni comes directly from you right. Turn up this drainage and continue to a small lake about 400 meter upstream. Once here, you may ski more west (ie. a bit left) to the summit located about 1.2 kilometer away.
Comments:
It was very cold, around -18C, when I started shortly after 1030. The first part of the route should follow the trail to the DNT hut Høgabu, however it is hard to see where to go after leaving the valley floor. Later in winter, one can normally see tracks from previous skiers. The sun was illuminating the hills on the opposite side of Bergsdalen.
I made steady progress, but forgot to ski upstream to the last lake. I believed that I could ascend directly from the waypoint. This was a pretty stupid mistake since I now came on the wrong side of a long cliff band. The best continuation was still to cross over this local (911m) top, then descend on the north side and proceed to the summit.
I was there close to 1300, it had taken me almost 3.5 hours to get here. Nice winter views. I started my way back after about 10 minutes. The return ski was much easier, as it often is. The moon was up, but the last rays of sunshine still visible. It had been a very nice day in the mountains.
